'Lord Of War'
(Nicolas Cage, Bridget Moynahan, Ethan Hawke, Jared Leto, et al / R / 84 mins / Lions Gate)

Overview: A global arms dealer (Cage) has to deal not only with Interpol agents on his tail but also a girlfriend (Moynahan) who's beginning to think her man might be dabbling in something illegal.

Verdict: Any time you're watching a film in which the statistics in the voice-over have more intrinsic drama than the protagonists' lives, you know you're in trouble! Welcome to the narrative world of Nic Cage and co. 'Lord of War's tone of mournful irreverence runs its course after a while for sure, but during that initial period of time Cage is deadpan funny and the events that unfold are bleakly funny, and always bitterly cynical! And, in the end, Yuri is played by Nicolas Cage in another of those performances you cannot easily imagine anyone else doing ... so, that's worth something, isn't it?!
