'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events'
(Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep, Emily Browning, Kara Hoffman, Liam Aiken / PG / 89 mins / Paramount)

Overview: When a mysterious fire burns down their house and kills their parents, Klaus (Liam Aiken), Violet (Emily Browning), and Sunny (Kara and Shelby Hoffman) are sent to live with a scheming relative, Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), who has designs on their inheritance.

Verdict: If Olaf is funnier and less threatening than he is in the Snicket books, that's just the price of attaching a big star to a project! 'Lemony Snicket's ...' is a pleasantly watchable entertainment in all the spaces in the story not laid siege to by Mr. Carrey and therein lies it's possible downfall to a wider audience. Basically, the movie is a cinematic achievement of whimsically bleak comedy, and although is notably steeped with inspired inventiveness, exposes it's weak links in this chain of mishaps many times too often come the end.
