'Exorcist IV: The Beginning'
(Stellan Skarsgård, James D'Arcy, Izabella Scorupco / R / 87 mins / Morgan Creek)
Overview: This prequel to the 1973 classic horror flick The Exorcist recounts Father Merrin's early 20th-century journey to Africa, where, while doing missionary work as a young priest, he has his first encounter with Satan.
Verdict: This annoyingly disjointed shocker stumbles badly after promising early scenes, and quickly devolves into a chaotic blur of underdeveloped characters, illogical transitions and standard-issue scary-movie tropes! Barely coherent at the best of times, 'Exorcist: The Beginning' in all fairness isn't quite the unmitigated disaster it could have been — but it's pretty darn close! Insipid, un-scary, half-assed, violent, tedious and gore-splattered, makes 'Alien vs. Predator' look like a classic!!
