'Hero'
(Jet Li, Tony Leung, Zhang Ziyi, Jiang Wen / R / 91 mins / Miramax)
Overview: A martial arts master in ancient China (Jet Li) is summoned to the emperor's palace after he defeats three great warriors — Broken Sword, Flying Snow, and Sky.
Verdict: In short, 'Hero' is a dazzlingly lensed, highly stylized meditation on heroism and the point at which individualism conflicts with the common good. Zhang Yimou may have dipped his cinematic pen in mere genre, but in doing so, he has inscribed a masterpiece. The film is a stunning achievement. Nearly every shot is beautiful, impossible, or both. Stretching the envelope for imagery we've never seen on the big screen before, for a lot of people, there's nothing better than the quite astounding, 'Hero'.
