'Gods and Generals'
(Bruce Boxleitner, Robert DuVall, Billy Campbell, Jeff Daniels / PG-13 / 97 mins / Warner Bros.)
Overview: Based upon the book Gods and Generals, this is the prequel to 1993's Gettysburg, a TNT TV movie. Set just prior and during the Civil War, this is the true story of the Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorville.
Verdict: Who in their right mind would want to endure this, besides 11th grade American History teachers and those diehards who spend their weekends re-enacting Civil War skirmishes is beyond me?! 'Gods and Generals' is stiff and ponderous, fluttering in its 'poetry,' and yet crudely simplistic for the most part. It's hard to imagine anyone but the most fervid Blue and Gray enthusiast taking another look if they enter the battle now and it's pretty obvious that younger auds will retreat en masse, leaving the field to older moviegoers and Civil War buffs able to tolerate the slogging pace! This could've been a decent miniseries at best, but as entertainment, it loses the war to hold our interest.
