30 Seconds To Mars 30 Seconds To Mars

'Revealing the True Fortune of Lies!'

Drawing on influences ranging from masters like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Rush to other important artists such as Brian Eno and The Cure, 30 Seconds To Mars transcends the chaos of the modern world by allowing listeners to imagine themselves away from it.

Best known as an actor, Jared Leto was also a rocker. His band, 30 Seconds to Mars, debuted in 2002 with a self-titled effort featuring a post-grunge sound suggestive of groups like Chevelle or Incubus. 30 Seconds returned three years later with A Beautiful Lie. By that point the line-up had shifted a little, slotting in Tomo Milicevic at guitar alongside Leto's vocals and guitar, his brother Shannon Leto on drums, and bassist Matt Wachter.

Chatting recently with guitarist Tomo Milicevic, I first wondered where the bands name had originated? "The band's name came from a fortune cookie!"

And just what else could it so easily have been?! "Snow-Axe was another working title."

With the new album entitled Beautiful Lie, I'm wondering what the most splendidly put together lie is that you've ever told ... and did it work?! "Well, I called my mother and told her that I was going to become a woman. She was crying hysterically and said please reconsider, but I told her that I just had to do it. I came home wearing a dress and we had a laugh ... So, no it didn't work!"

Which one song on this new album encapsulates 30 Seconds To Mars at their current musical finest? "I think that all of us really love 'Was It A Dream,' but 'Attack' is really the song that received the most brutal punishment and still came out as the best song on the record. We are all really very proud of that song."

Along the way, being an independent artist always has its risks, so what has been the biggest risk that you as a band have undertaken thus far? "The biggest risk that any band could take is to be true to their hearts and true to their art."

Does having a movie star as a front man bring both good and bad vibes to a musical project that shouldn't be inflicted either way? "Every band has its own set of challenges, and obstacles on the road ahead of them. Whether its a singer that is addicted to drugs, or a singer that is over-weight, or someone who is an all around asshole. We will gladly take our challenges over another band."

How is this new album musically progressive from your self-titled debut? "With this record we really tried to see how little we could do, and to focus on the song. Rather than fill the space with as much noise and atmosphere as possible, we opted to leave as much emptiness as we could. Jared came up with some really incredible lyrics and vocal melodies, and we didn't want to take any attention away from that."

What cheesy '80s song would you love to cover if asked?! "Journey, ... 'Don't Stop Believing'."

If you were asked to record a single for charity, and had to choose 3 other KNOWN musicians to aid you in the project (and no one from your own band!), who would they be, what instruments would they play, and what would the name of the NEW song be?! "Trent Reznor, Bjork, and Ricky Martin. They would all play Harp. It would be a harp project and the song would be called 'Flight of the Harp'."

Finally, I like Penguins, ... do you? "Penguins scare me! They can't be trusted!"
