'The Revelation Of Lee 'Scratch' Perry'
(Lee "Scratch" Perry, et al / DVD / NR / 2019 / MVD Visual)

Overview: This highly in depth new documentary is set at Lee "Scratch" Perry's mountain top home and studio in Switzerland and features some of the actual sessions for the original studio recording of Revelation.

DVD Verdict: Focusing on Lee's work in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Steve Marshall - in both his engineering and his producer ("John Saxon") roles - it has to be said that this new documentary on Perry is one of the most interesting, vivid, colorful ones that I think I've ever seen.

In what is, at its core, a music documentary of the making of the dub reggae legend's Grammy®-nominated reggae album Revelation, running at nearly two and a half hours, 'The Revelation Of Lee "Scratch" Perry' is a wondrous treasure trove of behind-the-scenes reveals and so much more.

For those not in the know though, Lee "Scratch" Perry is one of the most important figures in the history of reggae music. Not only did he help develop the early reggae sound captured in a number of important recordings, but as an engineer, producer, songwriter, and performer he pioneered a number of innovations, including dub reggae.

Indeed, Revelation is the third of a series of collaborations with UK multi-instrumentalist Steve Marshall, following the controversial Scratch Came, Scratch Saw, Scratch Conquered and Grammy-nominated The End of An American Dream.

Like the duo's previous collaborations, a few special guests have joined the party here (while not appearing in this film). The biggest names this go-round including George Clinton (the king of funk), Keith Richards, plus Duncan and Green, Tim Hill, Dr Sleepy, Alec Hay, elodieO and Abi Browning, and also David Stewart Jones.

So, is Revelation reggae? Dub? Avant-garde madness? Electronic warfare? Yes to all, and therefore no to all; at least not in any definitive way!

Visually, 'The Revelation Of Lee "Scratch" Perry' is an interplay of color and light, ritual and the mystical aspects of Lee Perry's spiritual and worldly spontaneity, and a frank snapshot of his musical genius.

The documentary also includes excerpts of a free-flowing and revealing interview of Lee Perry by Steve Marshall as a delightful Special Feature. Fascinating from start to finish and highly recommended. This is a Widescreen Presentation enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
