'Women Who Kill'
(Ann Carr, Ingrid Jungermann, Sheila Vand, Annette O'Toole, et al / DVD / NR / (2016) 2018 / Film Rise - MVD Visual)
Overview: Commitment phobic Morgan and her ex-girlfriend Jean, locally famous true crime podcasters, suspect Morgan's new love interest is a murderer.
DVD Verdict: Set amid a highly suspenseful, yet comedic backdrop of a whodunnit premise with a female serial killer running loose in the city and the suspicions among a close knit group of friends as to whether the killer is in their midst, 'Women Who Kill' is most definitely, and without a shadow of a doubt, my movie of the year thus far!
The undercurrent of the plot, as it plays out, seem to be a metaphor for the challenges faced in navigating relationships; but in particular a new relationship and the insecurities that become apparent during such moments.
Maybe for that alone, it was a brilliant juxtaposition of genres alternating between mystery, seething dark humor, and a hint of suspense. Who is the killer? Is anyone the killer? Is she the killer or isn't she? Is this all her / their my head? Shit, is it all in my head?! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1:85.1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
