'Masterpiece Mystery! Unforgotten, Seasons 1 + 2'
(Nicola Walker, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Trevor Eve, et al / 2-Disc Blu-ray / R / 2018 / PBS)

Overview: Nicola Walker (Last Tango in Halifax) and Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Indian Doctor) lead a powerful ensemble cast in this highly-acclaimed, thrilling crime drama.

Blu-ray Verdicts: DCI Cassie Stuart and her partner, DI Sunil "Sunny" Khan re-open cold murder cases from decades past, throwing lives into turmoil as they seek justice for their unforgotten victims.

In the six-episode first season, when the body of a young man is discovered in a derelict building, DCI Cassie Stuart is called in to investigate with her partner, DI Sunil Khan.

Jimmy Sullivan was a homeless boy, murdered in 1976 when the building was a hostel. His diary implicates four suspects; a clergyman, an eminent entrepreneur, a community worker and a wheelchair-bound husband caring for his wife. Each has a secret to hide.

The investigative process by which DCI Cassandra Stuart and DI Sunil Khan use a set of car keys that were found underneath the skeleton, to track down the vehicle to which the keys belong, and subsequently identify the murder victim, is absolutely fascinating.

In fact, the entire depiction of the scientific procedures and techniques used by the forensic specialists is decidedly interesting and educational.

As the story unfolds, the dramatic events in the lives of the main characters gradually emerge, and the intersection of these characters around the victim of the crime, almost forty years previously, provides the key to solving this murder mystery.

As always, the performance of the lead actor, Nicola Walker, is outstanding, as is the performance of her primary supporting actor, Sanjeev Bhaskar.

In the six-episode second season, the detectives have been tasked with the investigation into the identity of skeletal remains which had been sealed in a suitcase many years earlier, and that were recently dredged from the River Lea in North East London.

As a result of their persistent detective work, it is established that the skeletal remains are from a 39-year-old man, who had been stabbed in the left chest with a large knife, and murdered.

Once again, and I really cannot stress this enough, the investigative process by which DCI Cassandra Stuart and DI Sunil Khan use the serial number from his watch and the memory card from his pager, to establish the identity of the murder victim, as well as compile a list of possible suspects, is absolutely fascinating. In fact, and once again, the entire depiction of the scientific procedures and techniques used by the forensic specialists is decidedly interesting and educational.

Indeed, much like the first season, this second outing of 'Unforgotten' is a decidedly intelligent, intriguing, and gripping murder mystery and drama, and I, for one, found it to be extremely engaging and entertaining.

Both seasons feature superb plot and character development, as well as great acting performances, and it definitely merits a binge watching evening, of that you have my word. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
