'Quantico - The Complete First Season'
Priyanka Chopra, Josh Hopkins, Jake McLaughlin, Aunjanue Ellis, Yasmine Al Masri, et al / 5-Disc DVD / NR / 2016 / ABC Studios)

Overview: ABC Studio's new hit TV show 'Quantico' is a look at the lives of young FBI recruits training at the Quantico base in Virginia when one of them is suspected of being a sleeper terrorist.

DVD Verdict: Well, apparently, drama genre ventures further from hospital or law court and now lands on FBI academy. The mystery action element is simply a mask for typical juvenile drama, it's almost like an imitation of How to Get Away with Murder but without the charm. Granted, Quantico houses an array of characters, but they are buried under many plot holes and simply too far fetch to be agents.

Straight from the first act, our lead heroine Alex (Priyanka Chopra) fornicates with stranger just before entering the academy and then proceeds to divulge the information on the hallway for all to hear. If this is an attempt to create tough female lead, it's a misguided way. Having the lead confident is one thing, but relying on air of superiority or gratuitous sex appeal is pretentious, not empowering.

There are also several flaws that are too blatant to overlook. For example, the background check seems too lax. If FBI can't find anomalies on their own recruits, it's not logical to put these guys on field for national security. Not to mention, a twin can sneak into the academy and pretend to be one person like on Olsen twins' old movie.

The good thing is some of the characters are pretty intriguing. They are probably cast to accommodate different demography. The inclusion of investigation is decent, leaving room for more dirty secrets and twists, but it feels timid compared to recent thriller like Blacklist or simply there for shock effect.

I understand that 'Quantico' is drama at heart, but its title alone invokes authority, it'd be better if it can present actual FBI investigation or tactical approach instead of focusing too much time on churlish plot. For those expecting the same FBI academy that produces Clarice Sterling (Silence of the Lambs), you'd be disappointed to see that 'Quantico' looks more like an FBI version of 'Grey's Anatomy'.
