'Paco And John: Live at Montreux 1987’
(Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin / DVD+2CD / NR / 2016 / Eagle Vision)

Overview: On July 15th, 1987, two guitar maestros, Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin, shared the stage at the Montreux Jazz Festival for an evening of breathtaking flamenco music. The show opened with a solo piece from John McLaughlin, followed by a solo piece from Paco de Lucia, before the two virtuosos joined forces in a series of duets for the rest of the evening.

DVD Verdict:Just to enlighten you a tad bit more on both the incredible artists, Francisco Gustavo Sánchez Gomez, known as Paco de Lucía was a Spanish virtuoso flamenco guitarist, composer and producer. A leading proponent of the new flamenco style, he helped legitimize flamenco among the establishment in Spain, and was one of the first flamenco guitarists to have successfully crossed over into other genres of music such as classical and jazz.

John McLaughlin is an English guitarist, bandleader and composer. His music includes many genres of jazz which he coupled with elements of rock, Indian classical music, Western classical music, flamenco and blues to become one of the pioneering figures in fusion.

So, obviously here on ‘Paco And John: Live at Montreux 1987’ pretty much the repertoire is drawn from their solo albums, from albums by The Guitar Trio and from covers of music written by friends such as Chick Corea and Egberto Gismonti. This is a superb concert - to be seen on the DVD or listened to on the 2CD set - for any lover of great flamenco guitar playing or indeed for anyone who loves to see great musicians performing at their very best.
