'Masterpiece: Mr. Selfridge Season 4, The Final'
(Jeremy Piven, Amy Beth Hayes, Katherine Kelly, Ron Cook, Tom Goodman-Hill, et al / 3-DVD / NR / 2016 / PBS)

Overview: Emmy® Award-winning actor Jeremy Piven (Entourage) reprises his role as the colorful but deeply troubled Harry Selfridge in season four of MASTERPIECE's lavish period drama, 'Mr. Selfridge'. Katherine Kelly (Coronation Street) is set to return as the alluring socialite, Lady Mae Loxley.

DVD Verdict: In truth, this is really a fascinating show about a self-made entrepreneur, an American in England, who opened one of the worlds first and most successful department stores. The intrigue with the owner and his family, the stores employees and customers and the general changing world the story is set in, is well done and keeps you wanting more. I really love the clothes and sets, but that's just me.

If you didn't know, all of the story line takes place for the most part at Selfridge's department store which is based on true facts. I particularly enjoyed watching as I have traveled a great deal and spent two weeks in England. It was simply a week off from all my London sightseeing!

Anyway, Mr. Selfridge was quite a bounder (even though he was American) and as depicted in the show had quite a few dalliances with showgirls - whilst maintaining a lovely, patient wife and four children. He even allowed his son to follow in his footsteps and become a part of the store at a young age when the boy expressed a strong desire to do so.

Here in Season 4, which also doubles as (sadly) the fourth and Final season, and not to give too much away, but the climactic battle for the future of London's iconic department store is ON! Co-staring Amanda Abbington (Sherlock), Katherine Kelly (Coronation Street), Tom Goodman-Hill (The Imitation Game), and many others as the loyal staff and stylish visitors to this glittering retail palace, Mr. Harry Selfridge (three-time Emmy Award winner Jeremy Piven) is at the pinnacle of his wealth and celebrity, enjoying the frenzy of the roaring '20s.

But in this buzzing, fast-evolving world, Harry is splashing his cash in an unprecedented, dangerous way. As creditors close in, can Harry seal the deal that will save his mercantile empire?

There is also a worthy deepening of the characters as more of their backstory is revealed. You see why they are the way they are and why they do what they do. It may not give you cause for acceptance, but understanding for sure. Personally, and as much as I am enjoying this series as pure entertainment, I am actually finding it historically interesting to see the beginnings of the modern department store that we know today. Having worked in department store myself I found all those little details such as the introduction of the perfume counter at the front of the store very interesting from a geeky historian point of view, so to speak. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
