'NCIS: The Best of Abby'
(Pauley Parrette, Mark Harmon, Brian Dietzen, David McCallum, Sean Murray, et al / DVD / NR / 2015 / Paramount Pictures)
Overview: This special DVD set collects the 12 favorite Abby Scluto episodes as chosen by her fans ... all introduced on-screen by Pauley Perrette herself!
DVD Verdict: In truth, this original 'NCIS' TV show is a skillful balance of humor and serious drama. None of the major characters is static, i.e. there is depth. Every week, we discover more about the characters, who they are, where they are coming from, why they do what they do. But the show does not sacrifice the plot for the sake of the characters. The stories are well thought-out and believable.
The cast is superb, with Mark Harman leading the ensemble. What a complex character, that Leroy Jethro Gibbs! At first, I did not like Tony; I thought he was an ego-centric, male chauvinist pig, but there's more in there than the id-controlled Mr. DiNozzo, as I'm sure after twelve seasons you can all agree with me. Tim McGee started out like a puppy, willing to please. Well, that puppy's growing up, folks, and watch out!
Then there's Abby - I just adore Abby! The mix of scientist, alternative lifestyle, street smarts and just a touch of naiveté.
Here in a very special 12-episode collection, featuring the forensics "goth goddess" Abby Sciuto. As noted above, all 12 episodes are specially picked from the many seasons of 'NCIS', all featuring Abby in a prominent role. The twelve episodes are all good ones, and the collection is a nice retrospective on the changing casting at 'NCIS'. I mean, who remember Gerald, Ducky's assistant from the very first season, or Sasha Alexander, now on 'Rizzoli and Isles', from the first two seasons? Also, and thankfully, among the best is the infamous Halloween episode in which Abby channels Marilyn Monroe!
