'Mike & Molly: The Complete Fifth Season'
(Billy Gardell, Melissa McCarthy, et al / 3-DVD / NR / 2015 / Warner Bros. Home Entertainment)

Overview: Billy Gardell and Melissa McCarthy return in season five of this hilarious comedy about a working-class Chicago couple who'd almost given up on love…but then found each other. Officer Mike Biggs is a good-hearted cop who was instantly smitten by Molly Flynn, an elementary school teacher. After realizing they were meant for one another, they got married.

DVD Verdict: OK, as we all should know by now, 'Mike & Molly' is not brain surgery comedic TV watching folks! Mike is your standard issue comedy cop, complete with the obligatory funny black partner while Molly is your standard issue housewife-type girlfriend. Their relationship is fraught with the generic comedy-show problems which in reality would be easily fixed with 20 seconds open and honest communication. But in the world of comedy the obvious path is to talk to everyone but the partner and then decide to do something manipulative and/or passive-aggressive while the canned laughter plays in the background!

That said, and as Hollywood has since discovered, there is no doubt that Melissa McCarthy can act. She really knows how to deliver her lines. Peggy, the mother in law is so well cast she steals the show at times. The creators have surrounded the main characters with a good cast who do a fine job of supporting the story line. Sure, the laughs focus on humiliation, awkwardness, and passive aggression for the most part, but many of the jokes in the episodes here in the fifth season do circle the drain of being homophobic, sadly.

Anyway, here in the hilarious fifth season, Molly has now embarked on a career change as she has her sights set on being a writer. While attending the prestigious Iowa Writing Workshop, Molly sells her romance novel, but the excitement is short-lived as she now faces the pressures of meeting deadlines, taking notes from her opinionated publisher and dealing with her own insecurities as a writer. Aside from living under the same roof as his in-laws, Mike has to deal with his partner dating Molly's sister, and supporting his wife while riding the roller coaster of being married to a published author.

In closing, I should definitely put my personal stamp on this and say that every time I watch 'Mike & Molly' it does make me chuckle out loud, for sure. It makes my life look almost perfect and always puts a smile on my face. If you don't take it too seriously then you will enjoy it, trust me. And yes there are moments when you may be a little bit offended (as noted above), but it's meant to entertain, not insult so lighten up. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Feature of a Hilarious Gag Reel!

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE) brings the fifth season of the hilarious hit comedy Mike & Molly to DVD on August 18, 2015. It’s a season full of laughs, challenges, and triumphs for one of TV’s most lovable couples. With an advance on her first book, Molly (Emmy® winner Melissa McCarthy – Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy) has become a real writer and must juggle the pressures of her publisher’s deadlines with the challenges of writer’s block. Meanwhile, Mike (Billy Gardell – My Name Is Earl, Jersey Boys) must deal with his too-close in-laws and the looming debt he and Molly will have to pay if she doesn’t finish her book. Together, they embark on the next chapter of their lives as their crazy, hilarious love story continues to unfold. Mike & Molly: The Complete Fifth Season will retail for $24.98 SRP.
