'NCIS: The Twelfth Season'
(Mark Harmon, Rocky Carroll, Brian Dietzen, David McCallum, Sean Murray, et al / 6-Disc Blu ray / NR / 2015 / Paramount Pictures)

Overview: Fielding cases from local cyber-terrorists to international pirates and elusive serial killers, the NCIS team keeps adventure in the line of fire. Led by Special Agent Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), this expert squad hunts down humanity's most notorious enemies in the name of freedom and justice for all.

Blu ray Verdict: In truth, this original 'NCIS' TV show is a skillful balance of humor and serious drama. None of the major characters is static, i.e. there is depth. Every week, we discover more about the characters, who they are, where they are coming from, why they do what they do. But the show does not sacrifice the plot for the sake of the characters. The stories are well thought-out and believable.

The cast is superb, with Mark Harman leading the ensemble. What a complex character, that Leroy Jethro Gibbs! At first, I did not like Tony; I thought he was an ego-centric, male chauvinist pig, but there's more in there than the id-controlled Mr. DiNozzo, as I'm sure after twelve seasons you can all agree with me. Then there's Abby - I just adore Abby! The mix of scientist, alternative lifestyle, street smarts and just a touch of naiveté. Tim McGee started out like a puppy, willing to please. Well, that puppy's growing up, folks, and watch out!

Here in Season 12 - which is also on Blu ray for the first time EVER - there are en mass of life-and-death situations ranging from murder, espionage, and terrorism on the high seas. Alex Veadov plays the series' main nemesis, Sergei Mishnev, the brother of a Russian terrorist previously thwarted by the NCIS crew. He's out for blood and vengeance, both in equal measures and will stop at nothing to ensnare these guys into traps they never saw coming - or did they?!

Saving the best for last, the real "dark horse" of the show is, for my money, Dr. Mallard, played by famous Scottish actor David McCallum. He is probably the most intriguing of all these 'NCIS' characters. As a body forensics expert he has a strange past that he loves to share but personally, as a former medical student, I found the accuracy of his character's work to be fascinating. The autopsy scenes, while grisly, fascinate me because they're quite accurate in their depiction and their protocol!

'NCIS: The Twelfth Season' is show well worth seeing and is a family show which can easily be watched by more than one generation at a time. Sure there are some morgue scenes and sure there are murders, but each scene is done with respect, not just for the sake of spilling en mass of wasted blood. So, with that in mind, enjoy! These are all Widescreen Presentations (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and come with the Special Features of Deleted Scenes, Audio Commentary on select episodes, Cast and Crew Interviews, and over an hour of Behind-The-Scenes Featurettes!
