'Heaven Adores You' [Blu ray]
(Blu ray / NR / 2015 / Eagle Vision)

Overview: Heaven Adores You is an intimate, meditative inquiry into the life and music of Elliott Smith (1969-2003).

Blu ray Verdict: Having already premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival on May 5th, 2014, this unexpected documentary gem 'Heaven Adores You' has since taken the music world to a whole new level of fondness, devotion, even love for the late singer.

For those not in the know, given that he was not ever in the "mainstream" of the pop or rock worlds, but an indie underground sensation beloved by hordes, Smith (who died at his own hand in 2003) was an American singer-songwriter and musician. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and lived for much of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained popularity.

Smith's primary instrument was the guitar, though he was also proficient with piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. Smith had a distinctive vocal style, characterized by his "whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery", and used multi-tracking to create vocal layers, textures, and harmonies. Sadly, Smith suffered from depression, alcoholism, and drug dependence, and these topics often appear in his lyrics.

Anyway, directed by Nickolas Rossi, 'Heaven Adores You' is an intimate, meditative inquiry into the life and music of Smith, a musician whose rise to prominence in the 1990s and early 2000s was cut short by his untimely death. By threading the music of Smith through the dense yet often isolating landscapes of the three major cities he lived in: Portland, New York & Los Angeles, 'Heaven Adores You' presents a visual journey and an earnest review of the singer's prolific songwriting and the impact it continues to have on fans, friends and fellow musicians.

Indeed, at the conclusion of the film we have a rich view of an incredible and accomplished talent, a view that places music at the center of Elliott Smith's legacy. Also, this has been a true labor of love for the people behind it to put together and even get out, as this incredible, revealing documentary was actually first created three years ago on Kickstarter.com, but has taken this long to come out re: the San Francisco International Film Festival and now on Blu ray.

Director Rossi and his brilliant crew have put together a very respectful, loving and artistic tribute to Elliott here on 'Heaven Adores You,' and hopefully it will spark a whole new legion of Elliott Smith admirers and fans throughout the world. His music, as is shown clearly in this new documentary, was always inclusive of well crafted, and unique lyrics, which meant that every time you listened to Elliott Smith you knew he spoke for us all about the realities of life. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1:85.1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
