'The Best of British Comedy'
(Dudley Moore, Peter Sellers, Benny Hill, John Cleese, Peter Cook, Spike Milligan / DVD / NR / 2015 / Mill Creek Entertainment)

Overview: Over 3 hours of the funniest comedy from across the pond! Enjoy over 100 of the finest and funniest comedic performances from British comedians and comedy troupes in a special collection never seen before in the States! 'The Best of British Comedy' is a compilation of films, television programs, and live performances spanning over 50 years of British comedy.

DVD Verdict: OK, telling it like it is, I am British and so I myself grew up with 100% of every comic talent mentioned on the cover art of this brand new compilation DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment. That said, and planning to watch it for its entire 3 hours last night, I quickly noticed that some of the "stars" named on the cover art don't even get more than a minutes worth of screen time!

Now, another thing that will be highly confusing for a lot of Americans buying this DVD for their own "British comedy fix from across the pond," is that the names mentioned are, primarily, British-made "heroes." That's to say that they never made it over here in the States and so you might actually be watching people that a) you don't know and find unfunny (remember, this is stiff from the 60's and 70's, after all!) or b) you do know, but quickly dislike the fact that there just isn't enough exposure for the here on this new DVD!

Point in case is the slapstick King himself, Benny Hill. A phenom in England, a beloved cult figure over here in the US, weirdly he only gets about 45 seconds of grainy color screen time! But, and taking that a little further, and aside from a whole host of British comedians that you've probably never heard of, if you are willing to settle in with this one night and ride it out, all the way through, you will laugh; you will chuckle; and you will (for its low purchase price to begin with) pat yourself on the back for being a savvy buyer!

But, and as mentioned above, the actual quality of the DVD and the content is grainy, rough at times, and very hazy. No HD updates, no upgrades or remastering of the original tapes. Just old school footage - which is exactly what it says on the label, as they say!

'The Best of British Comedy' also includes: Tommy Cooper, Terry-Thomas, Morecambe & Wise, Harry Secombe, The Two Ronnies, Warren Mitchell, Norman Wisdom, Ken Dodd, Michael Bentine, Dora Bryan, Bob Monkhouse, Frankie Howerd, Tony Hancock, Mike Reid, Lionel Jeffries, Roy Kinnear, Max Bygraves, Arthur Haynes, Stanley Holloway, and even MANY more! These are all Full Screen Presentations (1:33.1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
