'NATURE: Beautiful Birds'
(2-Disc DVD / NR / 2015 / PBS)

Overview: Witness the secret lives of our colorful and popular feathered friends in NATURE's 'Beautiful Birds.' Four fascinating NATURE programs included: Hummingbirds, Birds of the Gods, The Magic of the Snowy Owl, and A DUCKumentary.

DVD Verdict: This two-disc NATURE documentary from PBS entitled 'Beautiful Birds' tells the truth all the way down the line. I mean, wow, what beautiful birds this globe of us contains, for sure. And PBS have gotten together some extraordinarily talented photographers and cinematographers to bring most all of them to the fore here.

NATURE's 'Beautiful Birds' allows us and up close and highly personal glimpse at some of our most colorful and popular of our feathered friends in this delightful documentary. Featuring some of the most fascinating and exotic birds found in nature - hummingbirds, birds of paradise, snowy owls, and ducks of all kinds - these four films capture the hidden lives of birds and our ongoing fascination with these creatures.

Hummingbirds - Hummingbirds represent one of nature's most interesting paradoxes. They are the tiniest of birds, yet they qualify as some of the toughest and most energetic creatures on the planet. Stunningly beautiful high-definition, high-speed footage of hummingbirds in the wild combined with high-tech presentations of their remarkable abilities help us to understand the world of hummingbirds as we never have before.

Birds of the Gods - The island of New Guinea in the South Pacific is home to birds so spectacular and unique that the first Europeans to see the birds in the sixteenth century named them "birds of paradise," believing they must have come to Earth directly from heaven. David Attenborough introduces a young team of scientists who are on a grueling expedition to find and film these breathtaking birds. Hoping to learn a few of the secrets of these heavenly creatures, and to find a way to ensure their future.

Magic of the Snowy Owl - A team of intrepid filmmakers provides an intimate look at the snowy owl, a bird made popular by Harry Potter's faithful companion Hedwig. Though "snowies" naturally stand out for their beauty, intelligence and charm, in their eerie, bleak Arctic home it is their determination and survival skills that are truly magical.

A DUCKumentary - Ducks are true originals. They waddle, glide, dive, and dabble, and their feathers shimmer with dazzling hues, brilliant iridescence, and come in every color of the rainbow. There are more than 120 different species of ducks in all, a fantastical group of complex characters with names to match - Buffleheads, Canvasbacks, Pintails, Shovelers, and Widgeons. Each bird is more fun than the last, and will leave you wanting more. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
