'Why Planes Vanish'
(DVD / NR / 2015 / PBS)

Overview: NOVA investigates the disappearance of Flight MH370 that completely stunned the world. It was a rude awakening for all of us, showing just how far we are from the world we imagined we lived in--in which every move is monitored all the time.

DVD Verdict: Can new technology prevent aircraft like Flight MH370 from disappearing without a trace? That's what NOVA sets out to discover here on 'Why Planes Vanish.'

In an era of smart-phones and GPS, how could a 270-ton passenger jet vanish into thin air? 'Why Planes Vanish' is the inside story of the search for Flight MH370. Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370/MAS370) was a scheduled international passenger flight that disappeared on Saturday, 8 March 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur International Airport near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Beijing Capital International Airport in Beijing, China.

Flight 370 last made voice contact with air traffic control at 01:19 MYT (17:19 UTC, 7 March) when it was over the South China Sea, less than an hour after takeoff, and the aircraft disappeared from air traffic controllers' radar screens at 01:21 MYT (17:21 UTC).

Of course, and not to give the game away here too much, Flight 370 has since been located at the bottom of the southern Indian Ocean, all passengers and flight crew presumed dead.

Here on 'Why Planes Vanish' though, NOVA tells the inside story of the search for Flight MH370 and meets the key players from all corners of the globe who had spent months searching for the lost plane. How easy is it to make a plane disappear? Can new technology guarantee that in the future, nothing will ever be 'lost' again? It also features aviation experts including Mary Schiavo, former Inspector General for the US Department of Transportation. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
