'Monika'
(Cerina Vincent, Jason Wiles, Jeff Branson, et al / DVD / NR / (2012) 2014 / Inception Media Group)
Overview: Reagan Tyler is a man troubled by visions and premonitions. In a cheap Las Vegas motel, he meets Monika, a beautiful young woman with seduction and revenge on her mind. Their brief encounter draws Regan into a surreal cat and mouse hunt for the hit-man who had earlier murdered Monika's sister.
DVD Verdict: 'Monika,' which is spelt everywhere there is info on this movie with a capital "K" ie: 'MoniKa' - well, everywhere save for the new cover art they have given this DVD release - was actually filmed back in 2012. So, it seems not only have we waited two years or more for this film to come out, but they have decided that the "K" doesn't need to be capitalized after all!
Moving on, Monika (the brilliant Cerina Vincent, 'Cabin Fever') is the protagonist of this rather good B-movie crime drama. Seemingly always ready to punch someone in the face, kick them in the balls, or simply point a gun at them, Monika has issues! No sh*t, Sherlock, I hear you say! But it's more than that, it's all about family! Isn't it always, I hear you groan.
Chock full of flashbacks, rapid fire flashes of blood splattered walls, Monika being good, bad or ugly, endless shoot-outs and even every stereotypical B-movie crime character known to man making an appearance, eventually Reagan Tyler (Jason Wiles) - our main man troubled by all these visions and premonitions begins to piece the truth together - or does he?!
With Vincent as the lead actress, and for the most part wearing sexy low cut jeans and a tank top, her character of Monika is definitely one for us to root for - whether she is good, bad or ugly, trust me! Jason Wiles as Reagan is competent enough as her partner, but all the lovey dovey stuff at the beginning could have been trimmed down. The editing is choppy, for sure, but that's the way I think it was meant to be ala Quentin Tarantino styling. In closing, 'Monika' is a good watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon with your friends round and beer and pizza on the table. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
