'Above Suspicion: Set 3'
(Kelly Reilly, Ciarán Hinds, Joanna Vanderham, et al / DVD / NR / (2011) 2014 / Acorn Media)
Overview: When the brutal murder of a famous young actress brings DI Anna Travis (Kelly Reilly, 'Sherlock Holmes') face-to-face with her old boss, DCS James Langton (Ciarán Hinds, 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'), the two must find a killer and deal with their own relationship.
DVD Verdict: In the first of the three 40 minute parter’s, 'Silent Scream' kicks off with that seems to be a period piece, but are quickly brought crashing back to a real-time film set. One on which the young lead actress is a right royal bitch, playing up, and full of herself. Indeed, she is so angry with the director she ups and leaves the set to be chauffeur driven home. So, of course, come the morning and she is found brutally murdered, posed dead in her own bed!
So it’s up to our two favorite as detectives, DCI Langton (recently passed over for his next step up the ladder to Commander) and the always stunning to look at DI Travis (who has definitely grown into her acted character role here from the very first time on screen playing her) as they try to work out who the bad guy (or girl) is.
She now takes charge of interviews, orders “her team” around, but is always polite, smiling and just wonderful! Indeed, they quickly discover that the actress was about to write a tell-all book and fear that - as we head into the second part of the trilogy - that this fact was why she was killed. Not much happens here in the mid-section of this whodunnit, save for the fact suspects are paraded back and forth for us to try and detect who would have the best motive for murder.
And come the third and final part, and as the late actress also had a druggie past, it seems someone is now killing off her three other ex-flat mates one-by-one! Is the killer the same one that killed the actress or is there now another killer out there taking matters into their own hands - and for their own reasons? A neat ending, with a twist that you do see coming late-in-the-game beforehand - IF you allow yourself deductive reasoning, of course!
