'Secret Policeman's Ball - USA' [Blu-ray]
(Various / Blu ray / NR / (2012) 2014 / Eagle Vision Entertainment)

Overview: 'Secret Policeman's Ball - USA' is a 137-minute show that features the cream of contemporary US and UK comedy stars. All performing brand-new, specially-created material tailored to the theme of freedom of expression it was been shot in HD at New York's Radio City Music Hall back in 2012.

Blu ray Verdict: To get straight to the point, this is a new version of an old, very old joke - and yet it STILL works! Allow me to explain: 'The Secret Policeman's Ball' is the collective name informally used to describe the long-running series of benefit shows staged in England to raise funds for the human rights organization Amnesty International. The shows started out in the mid-1970s primarily as comedy galas featuring popular British comedic performers and later expanded to include leading musical performers.

The shows have yielded movies, TV specials, home-videos, albums and books that have been distributed worldwide. The Secret Policeman's Ball shows and their spin-offs are credited by many prominent entertainers with having galvanized them to become involved with Amnesty and other social and political causes in succeeding years.

Musicians such as Bob Geldof, Bono, Sting and Peter Gabriel have credited the shows with inspiring benefit events that they subsequently helped organize such as Live Aid and Live 8 – and triggering their activism leading to social issue organizations with which they are associated including the Band Aid Trust, the Live Aid Foundation, the Witness human rights group, The Rainforest Foundation, the ONE Campaign, the Debt, AIDS & Trade in Africa DATA charity and the Global Elders.

That all said, and this 'Secret Policeman's Ball - USA' continues that vibe with over fifty comedic talents, such as: Jon Stewart, Ben Stiller, Eddie Izzard, Russell Brand, Sarah Silverman, John Oliver, and amongst others, ten (10) SNL names that include Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, Bobby Moynihan, Kristen Wiig and Seth Meyers.

And whereas the UK version had Sting perform some music, the USA version still borrows from the UK by bringing us performances from both Coldplay (who get the majority of the music time with 'Viva La Vida,' 'Paradise' and 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall') and the new-at-the-time Mumford & Sons singing 'Roll Away Your Stone.'

And yes, yes, yes - you also get treated to some MASSIVE cameo appearances scattered throughout. Including members of Monty Python (all be they short videos from Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Jones) and several major movie stars, so keep yer eyes peeled! My fav moment though in the show was right from the off when Ben Stiller and David Walliams ('Little Britain') came out to introduce the show. After Stiller had tried to pump up the audience with some "U-S-A ... U-S-A" fist pumping chants, the comedic duo began comparing English and American words "to help strengthen the union between the two nations!" This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of Backstage Interviews with many of the stars!
