'The Following: The Complete First Season'
(Kevin Bacon, James Purefoy, Natalie Zea, Jeananne Goossen, Shawn Ashmore, et al / 4-Disc DVD / NR / 2014 / Warner Bros.)

Overview: When notorious serial killer Joe Carroll (Purefoy) escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent Ryan Hardy (Bacon), a psychologically scarred veteran who captured Carroll nine years earlier, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on a college campus where he taught literature. But not everything goes according to plan!

DVD Verdict: OK, in truth I really had to work at the number of times I had to 'suspend disbelief'. I wanted answers as to how Carroll's followers managed to afford sophisticated technology, a helicopter, weaponry, and a huge mansion stocked with enough liquor and food for about 100 people. I also wanted to know where all these followers who came pouring out of the mansion at Joe's arrival, conveniently disappeared to at other times; there only ever seemed to be a handful around at any given time.

On a separate note, as others have noted, while I could see the followers pulling one over on the FBI once - but no way I can buy them so effortlessly doing it time and time again. This is all just the tip of the iceberg, of course. Having said that though, I was a huge fan of "Lost", where I had to take 'suspension of disbelief' to a whole new level; but absolutely loved the show regardless!!!

This show is a wild ride, and while much more gory than it needs to be (one of most terrifying movies I've ever seen is 'Halloween,' which had very little gore at all), it had me on the edge of my seat continually. James Purefoy is the star of the show; he has incredible magnetism, and is 'quietly' evil. He didn't rage all the time, and was mainly rather soft spoken, so when he would engage in a blood thirsty act; it rocks you back on your heels. It's not hard to believe how one horribly evil man can profoundly influence so very many, as history has shown us time and time again. It's this fact that actually creeps me out the most, in watching this show unfold.

Kevin Bacon has always been a tremendously underrated actor, because for 30 years, he's simply been known as that guy from 'Footloose'. I've seen many of his films and now his new TV show, and I have to tell you this guy is phenomenal. It wasn't just being able to pull of the character of Ryan Hardy, but also the chemistry he had with James Purefoy. Joe Carroll is one of the best villains I've seen since Hannibal Lechter and the chemistry Purefoy has with Bacon, easily rivals that of Hopkins and Foster.

The show is made even stronger by a tremendous support cast of complicated characters, all of whom have their own hidden past and issues that are brought to the table. Movie actor, Shawn Ashmore is terrific as the young agent who wants nothing more than the praise of his idol, Ryan Hardy. The boss is played by Annie Parisse, perhaps best known as A.D.A. Alex Borgia on Law & Order.

This show really has deep, well developed characters, that you get quickly attached to, and every time you think you know what's coming they throw a curve ball at you. The Following is such a strong story, that is so well written, that it really has the chance of being on the air for many years to come. These are all widescreen Presentations (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
