'Sweet Summer Sun - Hyde Park Live' [Blu-ray]
(The Rolling Stones / Blu ray / NR / 2013 / Eagle Eye Media)

Overview: The Rolling Stones historic and triumphant return to Hyde Park was without doubt the event of the summer. Over 100,000 delirious fans of all ages packed into the park for two spectacular outdoor concerts to watch Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood do what they do best.

Blu ray Verdict: OK, as much as I am a HUGE Stones fan I have to say what follows. I was expecting a good 50th anniversary concert, but I'm not impressed with this new RS release. First the performance is not one of their best. Probably because they all look seventies and perform as is, they have not the same energy as before. You will notice a big difference with their last concert films (The Biggest Bang and Shine a light).

Second, the film editing is poor: too many screen shot changes (1 to 6-8 seconds each screen view), too many audience shots, historical commentairies and screen shots. It would have been better to make a decent documentary with those last two screen shots types.

However, and with all that said, the best thing about this release is the stage presence of Mick Taylor for two songs. The highpoint of the two being an incredible, hair-raising Midnight Rambler. (But, if you look for one, if not the best, of the best RS concert film, look for Bridges to Babylon.)

As for what to expect, well, although over-produced, this live show in London's Hyde Park showcases the boys cranking out their hits such as: Honky Tonk Woman, Ruby Tuesday, It's Only Rock N Roll, Jumping Jack Flash, Sympathy for The Devil, Brown Sugar, and so many more. I Love Keith with You Got The Silver and Happy.

In closing, if the Sweet Summer Sun production and editing team ever read this, please release this film again properly edited to truly enjoy the brilliant camera work. We don't even get a complete shot of any instrumental solo, complete vocal line, etc. Why?

Track Listing: 1) Start Me Up 2) It's Only Rock 'n Roll 3) Street Fighting Man 4) Ruby Tuesday 5) Doom And Gloom 6) Honky Tonk Women 7) You Got The Silver 8) Happy 9) Miss You 10) Midnight Rambler 11) Gimme Shelter 12) Jumpin Jack Flash 13) Sympathy For The Devil 14) Brown Sugar 15) You Can't Always Get What You Want 16) (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.

This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Bonus Features of additional tracks from the two performances: 1) Emotional Rescue 2) Paint It Black 3) Before They Make Me Run.
