'Experience Montreux' [Blu-ray]
(Quincy Jones & Herbie Hancock / Blu ray / NR / 2013 / Eagle Eye Media)

Overview: Filmed in high definition 3D, this set brings together the Experience Montreux film plus concert performances from the Montreux Jazz Festival by Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones and the Global Gumbo All-Stars.

Blu ray Verdict: In truth, over the last 10 years or so, I've reviewed many of the Live at Montreux DVDs released by Eagle Vision. Though the festival from whose archives the performances come is officially the Montreux Jazz Festival the music styles are all over the spectrum with many rock and pop performers included.

This 85 minute film, 'Experience Montreux' was actually the last film produced by MJF founder Claude Nobbs. There are major names like Elvis Costello and Herbie Hanconk, world music artists new to me (from Brazil and Poland) and emerging indie-folk artists like Mumford & Sons (before their breakthrough) all recorded at the 2010 MJF.

Yes, there is rock (Massive Attack) and rap (NAS and Damian Marley). So, you do need an open mind to music styles when watching this. I have one so I enjoyed it. Between the performances are a few short interviews with the performers (about how important the MJF is) and some great stories from Nobbs (who died in December 2012) just before two of the three films here won awards at the 3D Film Awards.

Also, for lovers of the scenery also, not only do we get the artists involved chit-chatting but they are accompanied by stunning footage of the festival setting; the town of Montreux, Lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps.

The second disc comes in two parts: Part One features Quincy Jones And The Global Gumbo All-Stars with a track-listing of: 1) Bonatology 2) Eyala 3) Crossing The Border 4) Nonvignon 5) Paulinho Da Costa Solo 6) Happy Birthday / Brokeback Concerto 7) Lullabye Of Birdland / Somewhere Over The Rainbow 8) Airmail Special 9) Watermelon Man.

And Part Two features the Herbie Hancock: The Imagine Project with a track-listing of: 1) Actual Proof 2) Imagine 3) Seven Teens 4) Watermelon Man 5) Tamatant Tilay / Exodus 6) Court And Spark 7) Chameleon 8) Chameleon (End Credits). And, DON'T FORGET that this can be viewed/played as both 2D and 3D.
