'Naked City'
(Paul Burke, Horace McMahon, Carroll O'Connor, Ed Asner, Jean Stapleton, et al / 5-Disc DVD / NR / 2013 / IMAGE Entertainment)

Overview: THERE ARE EIGHT MILLION STORIES IN THE NAKED CITY ... One of television's finest police dramas, 'NAKED CITY' puts a human face on crime, going beyond a simplistic portrayal of good vs. evil to delve into the complex personal dramas of the people involved.

Blu ray+DVD Verdict: I loved this show growing up, and loved settling in at night to those opening words: "THERE ARE EIGHT MILLION STORIES IN THE NAKED CITY ..." 'Naked City' ran from 1958–1963 and there has never been a full set, in episode/year order. So, perhaps IMAGE can get to that later this year? Between 1958-1959 there were 39 episodes running at just 30 mins each, but between 1960-1963 there were 99 episodes running now at 60 mins each.

Anyway, let's get to the facts. And they are that 'Naked City' was a crime drama that focused on the lives of the detectives of New York's 65th Precinct. The emphasis in the stories was mostly on real-life crime and the human element. Season one stars were Lt. Dan Muldoon and Det. Jim Halloran; seasons 2-4 stars were Det. Adam Flint and Lt. Mike Parker.

Indeed, this was the first network series to be filmed entirely in New York City. But the real treat is the stories, many featuring some of the best all-time character actors of TV and Movies. No high tech, no sex, no graphic violence, no dirty words. Just good old-time TV drama that seems to forgotten in today's lousy free TV with all of those lame reality shows!

In fact, few TV shows in history sustained such a high level of acting, production and writing. 'Naked City' was a showcase for up-and-coming stage actors, such as Robert Duvall, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Ed Asner, and so many more. But, and as it should be, the city is as much the star of the show as the actors. Filmed in black and white on location (as noted above), the show visually captures the New York cityscape in the early 1960's, before the major building boom began.

Now, it should be told that 10 of the episodes in this 20 episode set were already released by Image Entertainment between 2003-2006. The same 10 are included in the 40 episode set being released very soon, so perhaps keep your hard earned for that bigger set. But, that all said, the other 10 here are all brand new to DVD. Titles such as 'Down the Long Night,' 'Sweet Prince of Delancy Street,' 'To Walk in Silence,' 'Tombstone for a Derelict,' 'Bullets Cost Too Much,' 'Prime of Life,' 'Lady Bug Lady Bug,' 'One of the Most Important Men in the Whole World,' 'Line of Duty,' and the wonderful 'The Pedigree Sheet.' This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
