'Spiritual Exercises'
(Various / DVD / NR / 2007 / Cult Epics)
Overview: 'Spiritual Exercises' brings together ten of Oliver Smolders short films, and contains a 48 page book among other special features.
DVD Verdict: This collection of ten b/w and color mixed films - in the realm of David Lynch, Peter Greenaway and Ingmar Bergman - captures such subject matters as the Lonely, the Pear-Shaped, Educational, some Children's Portraits, and (among others) a film for Antoine Wiertz. All filmed in French with English Subtitles, each is as mysteriously gripping as the next and although they sometimes don't go on long enough, for the most part you have to be a lover of any of the aforementioned left-of-center directors to genuinely get visually down and dirty with this set of 10 cinematic wonderments.
