'Yellowbeard'
(Graham Chapman, Peter Boyle, et al / DVD / PG-13 / (1983) 2006 / MGM-Sony Pictures)

Overview: Yellowbeard, a pirate's pirate, is allowed to escape from prison to lead the authorities to his treasure. He finds that his wife neglected to tell him that he now has a son, 20, and shame of shame, an intellectual. The British Navy, Yellowbeard, his son, and members of Yellowbeard's old crew all go after the treasure.

DVD Verdict: I like Monty Python and I also like pirate movies so when this movie was shown commercial free and unedited on cable I taped it and watched it the other day. And though it's not my all time favorite pirate movie it does - as a spoof of pirate movies - have it's funny moments. And three of my favorite Monty Python members, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle and John Cleese are in it, though it would have been nice if Terry Jones and Michael Palin had been in it too! The movie has a big cast that also stars, Peter Cook, Peter Boyle, Martin Hewitt, Marty Feldman, James Mason, Madeline Kahn and Cheech and Chong and also look out for in a small roll Bernard Fox who played Doctor Bombay in the classic TV sitcom 'Bewitched.' So, OK, here's another angle at the plot line ... a smelly (and murderous) pirate escapes from prison to find the treasure he buried 20 years before. Threatening to "kill anyone who gets in the way of me killing anyone," he encounters his faithless wife, a son with a map tattooed on his head, a blind swordsman who lays low an entire tavern, two potheads playing religious fanatics, a former friend who is annoyed that he now has a hook instead of a hand, David Bowie as a shark, Mr. Prostitute as James Mason's first mate on his ship, Kenneth Mars as a sailor who not only gets held over the side of a ship by his nose, but also gets his favorite organs crunched into a torture chair that he had the misfortune to design, and a bunch of even stranger characters! If you like THE BLUES BROTHERS, Cheech & Chong's UP IN SMOKE, or almost any of the Marx Brothers movies, bite the bullet and get YELLOWBEARD. NOTE: This was Marty Feldman's last film. He died while they were still shooting. Note that three quarters of the way through this film a body double is used and they kill off his character. This is a good movie, but in case you don't like low brow movies I think you should be aware that some of the jokes are a little sick!! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) and comes with the Special Features of only Subtitles in English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese.
