'Triad Trilogy' [Blu-ray]
(Tony Leung, Andy Lau, et al / Blu ray / NR / 2012 / Palisades Tartan)

Overview: Jimmy (Louis Koo) decides he'd rather go straight than follow mob boss Lok (Simon Yam) as the head of a notorious Triad gang. With the most qualified candidate out of the race, Lok attempts to hold onto power by pitting his would-be successors against one another in a 'Triad Election' (2006), but the government has a plan to blackmail Jimmy and make him return to the brutal campaign.

Blu ray Verdict: To be quite honest, quite why Palisades Tartan decided to group these three films in a so-called "trilogy" is beyond me - as, in truth, 'TRIAD UNDERWORLD' has absolutely nothing to do with the other two films! Aside from the fact that it is an inferior film to Johnnie To's brilliant 'ELECTION' and even it's sequel, 'TRIAD ELECTION' (otherwise known as 'ELECTION 2'), 'TRIAD UNDERWORLD' may well have no story link to the other two but it does feature a neat twist at the end.

But, yup, you guessed it, sadly it unfortunately takes too long for the film to get interesting. Also the character development and details of Johnnie To's films are much more interesting. 'TRIAD ELECTION' improves on the first film, 'ELECTION,' that's for sure. And, much like I assume will be the same for you, these two films were my introduction to Johnnie To as a director. And if that is the case, once you've watched these go rent other movies of his such as 'EXILED' and 'PTI.' This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs, and has been remastered into a crisp Blu ray production.
