'The Topp Twins - Untouchable Girls'
(The Topp Twins / DVD / NR / 2011 / DisInformation)

Overview: 'The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls' tells the story of the world's only yodeling country singing-and-comedy lesbian sibling duo - Jools and Lynda Topp - who have inspired a generation with their politics and celebration of joy.

DVD Verdict: OK, for the record, 'The Topp Twins - Untouchable Girls' is not only the highest grossing documentary in New Zealand history, now even one of the country's top ten movies of all time, but the winner of numerous awards!

But how, you may ask, has a yodeling country singing-and-comedy duo such as the lesbian sibling duo of Jools and Lynda Topp managed to achieve such honors - and so fast out of the gate?

Well, as comedy writer Paul Horan will also agree, "On paper they should not work. On paper they should be commercial death. But they totally deliver to the audience time and time again." And therein lies the true core to this wonderful documentary - heart, soul, passion, and a genuine love and devotion to the cause, and each other (let alone the camera!)

'The Topp Twins - Untouchable Girls' reveals exclusive performance footage of twins Lynda and Jools Topp that ranges from the '80s, when they were mulleted farm girls busking in the city; to their '90s sketch-comedy TV show (which features so many characters for them both to undertake, it will blow your mind!); to a recent return to the stage after one twin faced a health challenge.

I know, and that's just for starters, trust me! A true story of living your dream and finding success, no matter what speed bumps are put in front of you, the film tells a worldwide fable of inspiration, of music, of laughter, of activism, of politics, and so much more. Inclusive of the aforementioned yodeling (in which while the one sister fairly rocks the crap out of her acoustic guitar, the other not only yodels, but attempts to bring her knees up as close to her chest as possible with some zesty dancing!) also, the sisters are never daunted by their futures.

Inclusive of various testimonials from their uber proud parents, as well as from gay, feminist, anti-nuke, and Maori activists; let alone British musical icon Billy Bragg (who praises their "anarchist variety act", we even get up-close-and-personal access to footage of Jools going through chemotherapy for her breast cancer. Nothing is sacred here for the flannel-wearing sister, but not all is fun and bouncy - life at its most raw, at its finest, and it heartfelt truest. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
