Grant Langston remains an extraordinarily talented songwriter and musician. For this record, he is exploring a more country-rock sound than he has in the past. By country-rock, I mean music in the style more of The Eagles, than what is played so often on country radio. Most of the songs deal with the emotions surrounding troubled romantic relationships and are played by a five-piece band prominently featuring the slide guitar. The songs on this self-produced disc provide ample evidence of his skill as a guitarist ("The Word"), his ironic humor ("Land Of Love"), and his ability to capture deep and intimate emotions ("Smile"). If you want music more substantial than the slop played on the radio these days, here it is. In short, if you're a music fan looking for something really worth hearing, Chinese Fire Drill will fit the bill.
