Encapsulating everything racing through my mind about this album in one paragraph, although there will be more to obviously come thereafter, Bad is an amazing album in every sense. No skippable tracks. Most written by Michael. Stemmed an insanely sexy/cool aesthetic, ridiculously great and successful tour, phenomenal short films. Just an unreal musical time to be had by the listener.
But chasing the success and acclaim of Thriller is an impossible standard for anyone. So no matter how amazing any of Michael’s music was before or after, people would always compare his work to that. I would imagine it’s not just because of sales but all the groundbreaking and influential elements of Thriller coming out how and when it did. I don’t think it has anything to do with the actual quality of the album. In fact, I’m sure it doesn’t. But there it is anyway.
That all said, and it’s globally underrated due to the perception that Thriller, with its unprecedented success and video prominence could never be matched. I think the praise for Thriller is deserved, but the run of hits on Bad is (in my humble opinion) arguably stronger and deeper. It’s hard to argue Bad, with Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana, Man in the Mirror, Leave Me Alone, Liberian Girl, doesn’t match any run of tracks on any album anywhere at any time. All those singles went to #1 and you could argue it was his peak with such a chart dominance.
Putting it candidly, unfortunately the Bad era is when the tabloid nonsense started to overshadow his music. So people’s opinion of Bad was unfairly influenced by stuff not related to the music at all.
But I digress, as this is still one of my favorite albums EVER! The production by Quincy Jones is great as are the instrumental performances by various guest musicians. For me, this whole album hits just as hard: Man in the Mirror is one of the greatest gospel-pop anthems. The Way You Make Me Feel is sunny pop perfection, and Smooth Criminal defies genre - is it hard rock? Pop? R&B?
Conventional (historical) wisdom has it that Michael Jackson reached his artistic peak with Off the Wall and Thriller, and Bad was the beginning of a slow and steady decline. Bad contains more solid pop classics than most greatest-hits compilations (aside from the aforementioned, you also get Man in the Mirror, and Dirty Diana), a deeper bench than some may remember (Speed Demon, Liberian Girl, and the endearing Another Part of Me), and trailblazing visuals that expand upon Jackson’s legacy as the first genuine superstar of the video age (Bad and Leave Me Alone).
Comparisons with Off the Wall and Thriller are unimportant, except for this one: Bad is a pure pop masterpiece that stands parallel with - and, at times, eclipses - its classic predecessors.
