For those unaware, We Are Home is Josh Cohen’s first ensemble recording as a bandleader, and the culmination of a long personal and musical search.

Featuring all original compositions by Cohen, the album opens his writing outward after years of exploring the electric bass as a solo instrument, placing his compositional voice in a collective setting shaped by trust, improvisation, and the distinct voices of the musicians performing it.

The title reflects the idea that home is not only a place, but a feeling: belonging, shared purpose, creative possibility, and the people who help us find our way. Written during a major chapter of Cohen’s life as a musician, husband, father, and independent artist, the album carries traces of family, transition, return, and a deep connection to the Toronto and Canadian jazz community.

Featuring Jeremy Ledbetter, Lucian Gray, Rob Christian, and Mateo Mancuso, We Are Home lives between carefully crafted composition and real-time ensemble interaction. The music draws from jazz fusion, progressive music, groove-based writing, lyrical melody, and the expansive possibilities of the electric bass within a group sound.

With its title taken from Cohen’s changing relationship to place, family, and musical community after living in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and made possible with the support of the Ontario Arts Council, this incredibly crafted new set opens on the resoundingly resplendent Supernueve and the gentle funk-grooved, yet smoothly ambient Five on the Floor, before we are set on a wondrous journey involving flute, guitar, and bass solos on Next Steps, the wholly engaging Newborn and the robustly impassioned Operation Mexi-Can, the set rounding out on the sublimely sculpted Inner Embrace, the aptly-titled Elevate (where Elmer Ferrer’s nylon-string and steel-string acoustic guitar are pronounced), coming to a close on the ornate elegance of the simply beautiful My Lima.
