Title - A Live Musical Tribute to Peggy Lee
Artist - Angela O’Neill & The Outrageous8
For those unaware, as the Outrageous8 reaches its tenth year, that continuity leads naturally into A Live Musical Tribute to Peggy Lee, a project rooted in repertoire the ensemble has carried with it from its earliest rehearsals.
Recorded live on September 10th, 2024, at The Velvet Martini Lounge at Vitello’s Restaurant in Studio City, California, A Live Musical Tribute to Peggy Lee documents Angela O’Neill and the Outrageous8 in performance as the ensemble enters its tenth year together. The repertoire reaches back to the band’s beginnings, but the recording presents it through the group as it sounds now.
The tribute is built around repertoire associated with Lee, but the Outrageous8 does not approach the material as a recreation of her recordings.
Instead, the band brings its own arranging and ensemble voice to the program. Harry Smallenburg arranged “Outrageous ‘A’ Train,” “I’m A Woman,” “Hallelujah I Love Him So,” “It’s A Good Day,” “I’m Beginning To See The Light,” “I’m Gonna Go Fishin’,” and “Fever”; Rocky Davis arranged “Mean To Me,” “All Right. OK. You Win.,” and “Fly Me To The Moon”; and Dan West arranged “Why Doncha Do Right?” Bob Eberhart’s transcription of “I Love Being Here With You” draws from Lee’s original.

This incredibly heartwarming, and immaculately sculpted new live recording opens on the flourishing instrumental “Outrageous ‘A’ Train” and a song sung with as much conviction as the original “I’m A Woman,” and they are backed by the perky “Hallelujah I Love Him So,” the swinging lullaby “It’s A Good Day,” the low slung finger-snapper “I’m Beginning To See The Light,” with the playful, dulcet swing of “I’m Gonna Go Fishin’” along next.
We are next gifted the silky smooth, bluesy jazz, Al Timss-sung “Mean To Me” and then the coolest of sophistication is brought forth on the sparkling “All Right. OK. You Win,” and they are in turn backed by the magnificently embroidered “Fly Me To The Moon,” the smoky nightclub appeal of “Why Doncha Do Right?”, the new set rounding out on a duet with Timss on the swing-tastic “I Love Being Here With You,” coming to a close on a resoundingly snap-licious “Fever: A Live Musical Tribute to Peggy Lee.”
