For those not in the know, on August 7th, 2026, Steinway Artist Gerardo Teissonnière will release SOLER!, his third album on the Steinway & Sons label following the critically acclaimed Beethoven: The Last Sonatas (2022) and Schubert: The Complete Impromptus. This new recording explores the keyboard sonatas of the Spanish composer Antonio Soler (1729-1783).

Padre Antonio Francisco Javier José Soler y Ramos, whose works span the late Baroque and early Classical periods, is primarily known for his keyboard sonatas, originally written for the harpsichord and fortepiano. The prolific composer wrote more than 500 works throughout his lifetime, including over 150 keyboard sonatas.

It is believed that Soler studied under Domenico Scarlatti while serving at the Spanish royal palace and Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial in the mid-1700s. Regardless of whether Soler studied directly under the composer, he was well acquainted with Scarlatti’s music and considered himself to be a “disciple of Scarlatti.”

Striving to illuminate the artistic depth and expressive power he has found in this extraordinary and seldom-performed music, Gerardo opens on the stunningly crisp Sonata in G Minor, R. 87 and the decadent Sonata in D Major, R. 84 and then we get brought forth the regal fare of Sonata in D Minor, R. 39, the resplendent Sonata in D Minor, R. 24 and the elegant strength shown within Sonata in D Minor, R. 15.

Along next is the spirited Sonata in G minor, R. 42 which is in turn backed seamlessly by the energetically sculpted Sonata in C Minor, R. 19, the robust Sonata in F-Sharp Major, R. 90, the new set rounding out on the all-embracing Sonata in F-Sharp Minor, R. 85, coming to a close on the free-flowing elegance of Sonata in D-Flat Major, R. 88.

Teissonnière entitled this album SOLER! to honor and celebrate the many facets of Soler’s keyboard sonatas. He explains, “OLÉ! is a Spanish interjection used to express approval, encouragement, or celebration, frequently heard in flamenco dancing, bullfighting, and at sporting events to cheer on a performance or victory. This word happens to reside within the last name of the composer, which happily matches the essence of the music.”
