Title - Reflections [CD]
Artist - Jesse Davis Quintet
For those unaware, Reflections is a stellar example of the vibrant musical expression of Jesse Davis. On his latest Cellar Live release in the Smalls Live Living Masters Series (recorded at GB’s Juke Join, Long Island City, New York on March 2nd, 2025), and the follow-up to 2023’s Live at Smalls Jazz Club – another A-1 Cellar Live album - the altoist and composer is joined by a supremely empathetic rhythm team of pianist Spike Wilner, bassist John Webber, and featured guest, drummer Lewis Nash.
Summing up his thoughts about Reflections, Jesse says “I’m more than cool with it. This music has a way of taking you places you wouldn’t have gone, a way of teaching you things about yourself and the world around you. This album is a step in that journey.”

The album, which also has an autobiographical side, as demonstrated by several of the selections, inclusive of the impassioned opener Blue Autumn (which relates the tragic loss of a family member), and then we get brought the silky smooth title cut Reflections, the free-wheeling Choctaw Alley and the warmly emotive Funk Sugo, then comes the forthrightly detailed It’s Just Farewell, the set rounding out on an all-embracing Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans, coming to a close on some frenetically-charged rhythms and melodies that drive their interpretation of Evidence.
Musicians:
Jesse Davis - alto saxophone
Spike Wilner - piano
John Webber - bass
Lewis Nash - drums
