Title - Awake (25th Anniversary Edition) [2LP Color Vinyl]
Artist - Godsmack
For those unaware, the 25th Anniversary edition of Godsmack’s landmark sophomore album, Awake, is available now as a digital deluxe and on deluxe 2LP smoky-green color vinyl & CD via Republic/UMe.
This commemorative edition includes a special holographic lithograph of the cover art and features five bonus tracks, including Why, which was featured on the Any Given Sunday soundtrack, and a Black Sabbath cover of Sweet Leaf.
Following their multi-platinum self-titled debut in 1998, Godsmack returned two years later in 2000 with an album that not only met but surpassed all expectations. The release delivered a powerful collection of songs that quickly became fan favorites, including Bad Magick, Awake, and Greed, and cemented the band’s reputation as one of the defining acts of their era.
Building on the momentum of their breakthrough success, the sophomore album’s title track earned Godsmack their first Billboard No. 1 hit, while another standout single, Vampires, garnered the band their first GRAMMY® nomination.
The reissue celebrates a defining moment in Godsmack’s career, showcasing the enduring legacy of an album that continues to resonate with fans worldwide.

In my humble opinion, Godsmack has always been something of an enigma to me. On the one hand I think they’ve got great hooks, Erna’s voice is awesome, and I dig their clean sound. On the other hand, I often feel like they’re over structured, to the point of being repetitive. Like the song Bad Magick, which is one of my favorites, but also frustrating. It’s like I keep thinking insert guitar solo here please, but they don’t. I like them and I think they’re a great band, but if they had the balls to just get a little messy and crank out more lead guitar part, they’d be like Pantera level or even better!
That all said, Awake is an American phenomenon that sold over 2,500,000 in America and yet weirdly only sold 100,000 in Canada, peaked at #59 in Germany, and yet did not chart at all in most countries! A very strange thing especially when we know heavy metal ruled overseas for the longest of times.
I mean, where I live, the songs Awake and Greed where standards in Denver A clubs, with almost every band covering them early in the century. Godsmack woke us up out of our 90’s stupor so the world should surely thank them for bringing great alt-metal music back! I mean, the veritably instrumental Vampires even earned the band its first Grammy nomination. Incidentally, the songs Sick of Life and Awake were used for the United States Navy’s Accelerate Your Life recruiting advertisements!
In closing, this was a big step up from their self-titled record, they went all in on the grooves and the lyrical themes from Voodoo and it really pays off. It’s kind of crazy how likable and down to earth this record sounds when compared to later entities such as Cryin’ Like a Bitch.
