Title - Plaid Pants
Artist - Cyger & Butterworth
For those unaware, the architecture of Plaid Pants reveals itself gradually. Cyger & Butterworth each contribute four compositions, creating a deliberate symmetry. Within that structure, their differences become productive.
One writer gravitates toward layered rhythmic cells and harmonic pivots that shift the ground beneath the improviser. The other often favors melodic clarity and thematic development that invites expansion through phrasing. When placed in sequence, these approaches create motion across the album’s arc.
The duo format anchors the record’s identity. Even as global rhythmic collaborators enter select pieces, the core dialogue remains central. The additional percussion voices extend time feel rather than redirect it, offering subtle metric recalibrations and tonal color that deepen the ensemble field. The music never presents itself as stylistic experiment; instead, rhythmic perspective becomes part of the compositional fabric.
The album marks a defining statement for Cyger & Butterworth as an evolving West Coast collaboration built on balance—four compositions from each writer, shaped in dialogue rather than hierarchy. The duo format is not treated as reduction, but as a flexible core. From that core, the music opens: rhythmic frameworks shift, guest collaborators enter and recede, textures widen and contract. The through line is trust—structural, improvisational, and tonal.

On an album that finely documents a true compositional partnership, the duo open their new recording on the rhythmically infectious Pequeña Diabla and then we get the emotively sculpted Round & Round a track that belays its title, the far from clunky, moreover sweetly supple and elegant Clunky, before the boisterous title track Plaid Pants is brought forth.
Along next is the impassioned and flourishing Poydras St. which is itself backed seamlessly by the melodious finger-snapper Larry’s Lament, the set rounding out on the all-embracing balladry of Bye-Bye Blue Whale, closing on the upbeat and joyful LP.
Recorded with an emphasis on presence and ensemble interplay, the sound design favors immediacy. The listener remains close to the instruments—the articulation of attack, the resonance of sustain, the subtle shifts in dynamic pressure. This proximity reinforces the album’s central premise: conversation requires attention.
In an ecosystem that often spotlights individual identity, Plaid Pants makes a quieter assertion: partnership can be the primary voice.
