For those not in the know, NO HAY BANDA teams up with composer Zihua Tan to release his debut album what came before me is going after me, a set of two stunning works composed for the group’s musicians: the percussion solo remnants present, and the quintet what came before me is going after me featuring violin, cello, voice, percussion and ondes Martenot.

With regard remnants present, for many years I have come to play on the gongs and today, I came here to play with the gongs, Zihua Tan explains. As for what came before me is going after me, he reflects, lantern consciousness heightened, delicate hums were all that I could discern. they were loud, the hums, more deafening than inner dialogues trapped in a jar. for a moment I wondered who had left the door ajar, now memories - more disjointed and fragmentary than usual - came pouring out into the pool of unremembrance. thank goodness I’d forgotten how to swim.

The Malaysian-born, Canadian-based composer whose works have been performed in Asia, Europe and North America, at events such as Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt (DE), Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik (DE), Voix nouvelles de Royaumont (FR), and the Tongyeong International Music Festival, TIMF (KR) to name but a small few, opens up this new recording on the 16-minute remnants present: an absolute stunningly immersive work of musical art that wholly encompasses a unique lesson in performance.

Along next is the expansively creative, 34-minute opus what came before me is going after me: which opens quietly, veritably finding its feet before opening, blossoming midway, to eventually becoming emotively resonant.
