Title - Ascending Primes
Artist - Modney

For those not in the know, “Ascending Primes” is a brilliantly cultured double album of Modney’s compositions for solo, trio, quintet, septet, and undectet pursuing transcendence and ecstatic space.

Built on the foundation of Modney’s interests in tuning systems and exploring extremes of harmonicity and dissonance, the album convenes prime-numbered ensembles made up of the composer’s peers in the uncategorizable terrain between modern jazz and classical practices.

1. Ascender (7:14)
2. Lynx (9:30)
3. Everything Around It Moves (25:06)
4. Fragmentation And The Single Form - I. Source (7:06)
5. Fragmentation And The Single Form - II. Vox (8:24)
6. Fragmentation And The Single Form - III. Song (3:25)
7. Fragmentation And The Single Form - IV. Call (7:47)
8. Event Horizon - I. Serrated Scream (9:42)
9. Event Horizon - II. Passacaglias (11:03)
10. Event Horizon - III. Ascenders (12:18)

This elegantly sculpted new musical recording opens on the aching, veritably crystalline yearn found within Ascender and then brings us the all-embracing, near ten minute Lynx, the magnificently impassioned 25 minute opus Everything Around It Moves, with the four-piece Fragmentation And The Single Form along next, the album rounding out on the immaculately sculpted three-piece Event Horizon.

Modney writes in the liner notes, “Music, with its vibrational and temporal nature, gives us the possibility of ascending to states of being that would otherwise be inaccessible… It’s the liminal state artists are always chasing, the pursuit of which, for me, is a spiritual practice. The integration of Just Intonation into my music-making has brought this way of being closer to the surface. The primes in sonic form are, aptly, primal. They make you feel things, things that are powerful and contradictory and that lie outside the realm of language and rationality.”
