Title - 'Arrival'
Artist - aliensdontringdoorbells

For those not in the know, aliensdontringdoorbells comprise Dorian Foyil (guitar, sax, backing & lead vocals), Adam King (lead, backing vocals) and Christian Pearl (keyboards, backing vocals) and the band took their outlandish name from a conversation Foyil recalled witnessing between an old man and Foyil’s (then) six year old son on a New York subway platform a number of years ago.“It’s because aliens don’t ring doorbells!” To the guys in the band, the phrase ‘aliens don’t ring doorbells’ has some ring of truth to it and the name kind of felt right.

However, the bands debut album, Arrival (releasing October 2nd, 2020 via No Rules Records) differs from the Abba record of the same name in several respects.

For a start, Aliens have never won the Eurovision Song Contest – although the decade is still young – nor do their songs remind you of anything emanating from a Scandinavian idyll.

Instead, the band’s cute and insanely catchy tunes might just persuade you that it’s possible to reinvent the mainstream – if not, in fact, the wheel – long after your teenage years have passed into blissful memory.

Songs like 'Story' and 'Slipping Away' and 'Consummation' are inspired and intrepid blasts of mid-Atlantic rock – oh yes! – that will have you reaching for your hairbrush or tennis racket or whichever household implement stands in for rock n’ roll paraphernalia these days.

1. 'Consummation'
2. 'Slipping Away
3. 'It's Your Night'
4. 'Daylight'
5. 'Important'
6. 'The Heart is In Her Eyes'
7. 'Daddy Blues' (featuring Lex Lu)
8. 'Blind To See'
9. 'Choice'
10. 'Missing Pieces'
11. 'Story'
12. 'This Is Me'

This quite passionate and heartfelt debut album - with a vibe and sound throughout that bears a striking resemblance to the '90s band Deep Blue Something - opens with the mid-tempo rush of 'Consummation' and backs that up with the late '90s, funky guitar groove of 'Slipping Away,' the fabulously melodic waves of 'It's Your Night,' the '80s AOR synth/guitar vibe of 'Daylight,' and then both the gently drum-led, rock pop of the '90s-esque 'Important' and the pop hipsway of 'The Heart is In Her Eyes.'

More funky guitar is brought to the fore on 'Daddy Blues' (featuring the raw vocal energy and rap passion of Lex Lu), and that is followed by the fun and perky 'Blind To See,' the harmonious, yet lowbrow 'Choice,' the finger-snappin' ease of of the '80s-esque, pop breeze found within 'Missing Pieces,' coming to a close on their debut single, the politely tuneful 'Story,' and then the mid-tempo rocker 'This Is Me.'
