Title - 'Encores'
Artist - Nelson Freire

For those not in the know, Nelson Freire has long been seen as a connoisseur’s pianist, but a series of superb recordings have raised his profile to the extent that he is now thought of as one of today’s universally recognized great musicians.

Whether playing the great warhorses of the repertoire or the gentlest miniatures, he brings to his performances a level of quiet thoughtfulness that puts him in a class of his own.

Now the legendary Brazilian pianist celebrates his 75th birthday with a new album. A delightful collection of personal piano favorites entitled Encores it was released on his birthday, October 18th, 2019 via Decca Classics.

The 30 tracks range from Purcell to Rachmaninov; Scarlatti to Shostakovich and also present to us 12 of Grieg’s Lyric Pieces, along with such treasures as the Sgambati Mélodie de Gluck, the Paderewski Nocturne and Albeniz’s Navarra.

This quite stunning recital of works brings forth Freire's undeniable qualities just perfectly. With each work encapsulating his sense of occupying within a rich, lush, sensitive and expressive piano tone, each piece breathes and pulsates just as beautifully now as they once did.

Indeed, Freire finds and hones all this beautiful music, encapsulating it within strokes of art that lovingly reflect the musical phrases contained within each.

Using his Steinway concert model D to perfection here, these new recordings not only match Freire's tone within its registers and balanced musical expressions, but fine tune their immaculate nuances to birth works that are both delightful and excitingly addictive.

My personal favorites here are the two Rachmaninov’s Preludes, notably the expansive, deeply felt, B minor, which is heard alongside the gently melancholic G Sharp Minor, both played with unforced eloquence.

This new release also comes complete with a quite wondrous 23-page booklet that features 15 photos reflecting Freire's wonderful and exciting career.

Written in English, French and German, the details also add information about the artist and his rather colorful career.
