Title - 'Chouans'
Artist - Alan Simon

For those not in the know, Alan Simon is a French folk-rock musician and composer, best known for his rock operas performed with noted rock musicians guesting.

Simon is associated with Breton Celticism, and his most ambitious works are typically on themes linked to Celtic myth and history. Indeed, Simon has also branched out into film-making.

Simon achieved fame with his rock opera Excalibur, La Légende des Celtes (Excalibur, The Legend of the Celts) (Sony) in 1999, of which he was both songwriter and producer.

His brand new studio album entitled Chouans is Simon’s epic musical interpretation of the French Revolution and is being released to coincide with the 230th Anniversary of the start of the revolution.

This incredible and expansive new orchestral rock double album features all new studio tracks and is, from the very off, both haunting ethereal and yet buoyantly hopeful.

Inclusive within these moods are many bouts of invigorating fervor where Simon's orchestrated passion for hands held solidarity against the war and its undertakings is strong, loud and proud.

To listen to just one track might well be enough for the average bystander to be drawn in for more, but collectively, well, it is a vibrant, authentic and massively engrossing work of musical art that has to be heard to be believed.

“It's the dark side of the French Revolution! The unknown pages! 300 000 people died. Mainly paysans, priest and some nobles. They were killed in the west of France where I was born," Simon himself explains.

"It's the last French civil war! The very young republic just created the humans rights and 18 months later Paris the national assembly gave the orders to march on the district call 'Vende'."

"That's was where most of the royalists were leaving. But mostly poor people! That's the history! This is the first historical album about this history! It's an hidden story. No one is proud about it!”
