Beyond Rationality
By: Vittorio Bizzozero - Iff Books - $16.95

Overview: What if a cat could not only think but also reflect on the mysteries of consciousness, memory, and dreams?

In Beyond Rationality: An Imaginary Meeting between a Cat and a Psychoanalyst, a curious feline and her writer-human explore the blurred boundaries between the rational and the unconscious, weaving together insights from psychoanalysis, neuroscience, and poetry.

Verdict: Within Beyond Rationality, their collective dialogue takes the form of meditative reflections, surreal visions, and unexpected dreams. This is neither a manual nor a theory, but an invitation to rethink how we perceive ourselves and our place in nature.

As scientific precision meets animal intuition, a new mode of understanding emerges, one that listens as much to silence as to speech. A tender and thought-provoking conversation for all readers intrigued by the mind’s hidden dimensions.

A book born from a double movement: an encounter and a questioning, I have to honestly say that as soon as I read the synopsis I was immediately intrigued enough to want to know more - and then subsequently I was hooked and read the entire book in two sittings over two days!

The encounter part was with a being who lives entirely in the present, outside the categories through which we humans attempt to tame the world - his cat. The questionings was that of a psychoanalyst and a neuroscientist who, despite decades of study, continues to be astonished by the limits of what can be measured, codified or explained.

A prose that involves a psychoanalyst and an imaginary cat might sound like some far-fetched Sunday newspaper comic strip from the ’90s, but it has to be one of the most engaging reads I have had in the past few years. A cat that speaks in the first person, it doesn’t really matter how she gets her point across because she is not there to deliver facts; moreover to open doors.

As the author simplifies early on, the voice that carries through these pages of the most wondrously hypnotic prose is both his and yet not his. In choosing to let his cat speak, he does not seek to anthropomorphize her, nor to project human theories into an animal mind.

No, for what the authors intent is, is to loosen the grip of our rational categories, to allow another form of intuition to emerge - one that belongs to the living fabric of nature itself. The book is dedicated to those who remain curious - and to those who know that curiosity is inseparable from wonder - Vittorio Bizzozero, 2025.

About the Author - Vittorio Bizzozero is a Swiss psychoanalyst and neuroscientist with a lifelong interest in the mysteries of perception, the unconscious, and olfaction. A full member of the Swiss Society of Psychoanalysis, he studied under Jean Piaget and conducted olfactory research at the University of Pennsylvania.

He is the author of several books and numerous articles exploring the intersections of psychoanalysis, biology, and sensory experience. In 2012, he was awarded the Germaine Guex Prize for his scientific contributions. He lives in Geneva, Switzerland.
