In basic terms, Ego Degradation is the gradual breakdown of the mind’s conditioned programming and false self-identity, often experienced as a painful shift during personal or spiritual awakening. But trust me when I say that there is nothing basic or generic here within the pages of the rather enthralling new prose from author Alexx Shaw entitled Ego Degradation: Pulling back the veil of illusion to see your mind’s programming.

The term - which has now been explored for the first time in quite a while here within this powerful of mind new book - describes a process where the mental constructs, societal conditioning, and protective barriers built by the ego begin to collapse within us. Noticeably in an instant or, more likely, over time, once the veil has been pierced, what do we do? How should we then begin to function? Who do we talk to about what we are now freely experiencing?

Well, this so-termed Perceptual Change can feature external triggers, judgments, and even expectations can begin to lose their emotional charge, revealing that much of personal suffering, in general, stems from mere perception.

You begin to slowly notice this in different ways. For example, when someone responds to you disrespectfully you do not feel as hurt as you may have in the past. It was the ego that was feeling hurt and the less ego the less you are emotionally impacted by negative behaviors of others. You notice that you don’t want career promotions as much as you wanted in the past because it was the ego wanting all of that.

You are less judgmental of others even people with negative character traits or those that have hurt you. You truly begin to feel the equality of all humanity from a homeless drug addict to a president or king. You begin to realize that a lot of your former thoughts and actions were ego based and not stemming from your true self.

But, and cutting to the chase, that is when the state of Rebuilding can begin, for once the old programming breaks down, it provides an opportunity to consciously rebuild self-trust and awareness.

Veering tangentially for a moment, if I may, growing up I was gifted the knowledge that the 19th-century philosopher and psychologist William James uses (for the words Ego Degradation) the synonymous term self-surrender, and Jungian psychology uses the synonymous term psychic death, referring to a fundamental transformation of the psyche.

Indeed, in death and rebirth mythology, ego death is a phase of self-surrender and transition, as described later by Joseph Campbell in his research on the mythology of the Hero’s Journey. It is a recurrent theme in world mythology and is also used as a metaphor in some strands of contemporary western thinking.

In closing, what Alexx Shaw masterfully does here is not only make us aware that once we encounter Ego Degradation that we will, most likely, not even be close to being ready for it, and thus we will not be happy that it is occurring at that moment in time, but as Ego Degradations are not planned, it is important to realize that it is occurring because the trauma responses and false attachments that the ego has acquired are overtaking its normal functioning, and it now requires a reboot or a type of ‘cleanse.’
