Draíocht Ceoil
By: Geraldine Moorkens Byrne - Moon Books - $19.95

Overview: Within us all is the ability to hear the magic of sound, to use music and words to create a new reality. In Irish traditions this is known as Draíocht Ceoil - music magic - an ancient art deeply rooted in Ireland’s mythology and culture, used for generations to harness the power of sound for connecting to natural magical energy.

Verdict: This is the first book of its kind to examine the tradition of Draíocht Ceoil, its ancient roots in the poetic tradition of Old Ireland, and its evolution into a vital part of Irish folk magic practices.

From its early times, Irish society has elevated the roles of poet and musician to facilitators of magic, which has evolved into a rich tradition of both domestic and political magic, surviving throughout Ireland into the modern era, adapting to the needs of its generations. No musical or literary expertise is needed, only a love of sound and creativity, for Draíocht Ceoil to add depth to your magical practice. Its application to meditation and journeying will make it a perfect addition to your spiritual path.

My step-mother was the first, and well, in truth only person who taught me about Draíocht Ceoil, an Irish folk magic tradition with its roots in Druidic/ Filí heritage. She explained back then that it focuses on the use of sound including words to create magical effect; also to understand the sounds found in the natural world and use them to attune spirit to place.

I loved it when she told us stories of her homeland, and how sound can be used to change the energy of a place, manipulate crowd energy, or focus spell work. How music and word was inextricably linked in Irish traditions, and Draíocht Ceoil has many facets and equally, many uses.

For the practice draws its power from the sheer beauty of the Irish language combined with the artistry of Filidecht, the craft of the ancient Irish poets unmatched in their skill with words. This technically refers to the specialized poetry, divination, and wisdom practiced by the fili (plural: filid), an elite class of poet-seers in ancient Ireland and Scotland).

As fellow author Daniela Simina (Where Fairies Meet, A Fairy Path, Fairy Herbs for Fairy Magic) says, no one is better qualified for the task of examining and explaining Draíocht Ceoil than historian musician, teacher and author Geraldine Moorkens Byrne. As the readers will have the pleasure of discovering, Geraldine is rooted in Dublin’s history and music tradition, not only through her passion and profession, but also as part of her family’s living legacy.

But the author doesn’t stop at explaining the meaning, history and importance of preserving this practice for she introduces us to the nuts and bolts of Draíocht Ceoil inviting us to fully explore it.

About the Author - Geraldine Moorkens Byrne is a poet, writer and educator from Dublin, Ireland. She has been published widely as both a poet and a writer of short stories, novels and articles. She is also writes ceremonies for modern Irish Pagan Life Rites. She teaches Irish folk magic traditions online and in person, including at the Irish Pagan School. She is the author of a popular series of mystery novels, and her poetry collection Dreams of Reality is now available.
