Pagan Portals - Osiris: Raising the Djed Pillar
By: Olivia Church, PhD - Moon Books - $12.95

Overview: Dip below the Nile’s surface to the realm of ancient Egypt’s green-faced God of life, death, and rebirth. Known to the Greeks as Osiris, Wesir is one of ancient Egypt’s most enduring deities, worshipped from at least the Old Kingdom, alongside his consort Aset-Isis, until the 6th century CE.

Looking to the cycles of nature, the ancients saw Wesir’s mythology made manifest in the landscape of the Nile Valley, reassuring them that just as the crops grow, die, and return, so shall Wesir, and all those who repeat his rituals.

Bringing together Egyptological research and contemporary Pagan perspectives, this book invites readers to unearth the ancient mysteries of Wesir and to raise the Djed Pillar of his rebirth in the modern day.

Verdict: For me, when I first stepped into the world of ancient Egyptian belief, few figures loomed as large and enduring as Osiris to me. To the people of the Nile Valley, he was not merely a god confined to myths and temple walls — he was the embodiment of hope after death, the guarantor of moral order, and the unseen force that made the fields bloom each year.

His story was told and retold for generations, not simply as entertainment, but as a spiritual compass pointing toward the ideals of justice, renewal, and the promise that life continues beyond the grave.

Osiris, also known as Wesir, and yet was born as Geb, the earth god, and Nut, the goddess of the sky — a union that quite literally brought heaven and earth together - is also one of the most important Ancient Egyptian gods. He is king of the afterlife but also has power over agriculture and the fertile black soil along the banks of the Nile.

What we get here within the dutifully researched and expertly crafted new prose from Egyptologist and practicing pagan Dr Olivia Church, PhD, Pagan Portals - Osiris: Raising the Djed Pillar is, simply put, a must-read for anyone and everyone interested in the massive Egyptian pantheon; a complex, vast polytheistic system featuring over 1,500 deities that embodied natural forces, cosmic order and daily life.

About the Author - Dr Olivia Church is an ancient historian and Egyptologist, with expertise in prehistoric Egypt, ancient goddesses, feminism, and contemporary Paganism. Her love of the ancient world and her polytheistic Pagan path lends itself to her writing, drawing from academic expertise and her own spiritual belief and experience.

These days Olivia follows a predominantly Heathen spiritual path, though her polytheism has led her to maintain relationships with deities belonging to the Egyptian and Graeco-Roman pantheons as well. Outside of this, Olivia is an introvert who lives in the UK with her partner and their cat, and spends most of her free time writing, reading, watching horror movies, and listening to heavy metal.
