True Evangelical
By: John Went - Christian Alternative Books - $18.95
Overview: Within the adeptly written pages of True Evangelical - The Changing Face of Anglican Evangelicalism, author John Went writes as a convinced Evangelical and Anglican, addressing the many significant changes, both theologically and ecclesiologically, within Anglicanism and Evangelicalism today.
Verdict: Drawing from the author’s life of ministry as a parish priest, a theological college lecturer, an Archdeacon, and a Bishop, and set within a historical framework, True Evangelical explores some of the distinctive characteristics of those changes, seeking to sustain an understanding of Anglican ecclesiology that embraces both a rich diversity of church traditions and a focus on the parish as the heart of his self-understanding.
In what is a dutifully fascinating new prose on the subject matter to hand, author Bishop John Went shares his envisionment of a united Church of England whilst at the very same time not only calls for but expertly showcases the need for plentiful strain of diversity to exist within it.
With everything written here by Went wholly embedded within the scriptures, what comes forth is a loud voice wanting to be heard by a notably divided Church state. It evokes seasoned reasoning, at all times allowing for challenges to be expertly brought forth about following these scriptures, all in hopes that people can become re-engaged once again within its hallowed embodiment.
In short, and dedicated, as a whole, to his late wife Rosemary, Went wrote the book for two reasons. Over his lifetime and ministry he had become increasingly enlightened to value enormously the Anglican Church while standing within an Evangelical tradition whilst also believing there is something very important to be found in holding together both an Evangelical tradition and the breadth and depth of an Anglican tradition.
