Indigo Starling: Book One of The Shattered Empires
By: Dundas Glass - Cosmic Egg - $22.95

Overview: In a galaxy that bears the scars of millennia of war, peace is maintained by the Dioscuri, a near-mythical group of assassins. Mordax L’Amfour is a Traveller, an interstellar trader, scratching out a living on the fringes of civilisation with his father and the crew of their ship, the Indigo Starling. When cargo haulers begin disappearing, Mordax can’t understand his father’s insistence on investigating. But after his family is attacked, he has only one goal: revenge.

Verdict: Even if that means knocking on the door of the Dioscuri themselves. Akira Kudo is the daughter of the leader of the Kudo-kai. Once their empire spanned half the galaxy and innumerable worlds. That’s all gone. Dismantled by the Dioscuri until all that’s left to them is a single star system.

But now the supply of fuel for their starships, their lifeblood, has been cut off and even the remnants of their empire are under threat. Akira must travel to a hostile planet and negotiate with a madman to save her family’s fortunes. That is, if she can stay alive long enough to get there.

For me personally, I loved it from start to finish. Not quite sure of what to expect going in, I have to say that maybe, just maybe, that is the best way to approach any novel, as just a sheer outline (much like the one I read here) was gripping enough to have me intrigued and soon after enthralled with the prose that was brought forth on these most glorious of written pages.

In what is a rather majestically created cinematic world, one where we are presented with a war ravished galactic backdrop, our lead is Indigo Starling, a rogue trader trying to make a living amongst others akin to his trade, whilst circumventing a dangerous, perilous world, and one where a steep, yet quick learning curve is one commodity best paid attention to on an hourly basis.

Chock full of new, reimagined and imagine technology, I won’t give too much more away here, but suffice to say that combined with an underlying story of missing freighters, falling commodity prices, and redirected mineral supplies (all caused due to ancient wars and fallen empires), what we have here in this deliriously addictive read is a galaxy spanning adventure of the highest order - and one that Issac Asimov and Philip K. Dick would be very proud to have written themselves, one imagines.

About the Author - Dundas Glass grew up in London and is a Classics graduate of the University of Cambridge. After a short spell as a Latin teacher, attempting the Sisyphean task of teaching children to conjugate, he went to law school and now works as an international litigator. He has a lifelong love of science fiction, fed by his father’s battered copies of books by Asimov, Jack Vance and Philip K. Dick, and he writes in his spare time. Indigo Starling is his first novel and the first in a planned trilogy. He lives in London, UK.
