Hi, Mom! [4K UHD]
(Allen Garfield, Charles Durning, et al / Blu-ray / NR / (1970) 2026 / Radiance Films)

Overview: Aspiring adult film-maker Jon Rubin (Robert De Niro, Taxi Driver) returns from a tour of Vietnam and, armed with his film camera, attempts to find meaning and inspiration in his life from the burgeoning counter-culture of New York in 1970.

Rubin graduates from covertly filming his neighbors, to joining a militant Black experimental theater group, before flirting with full-scale domestic terrorism, in this hilariously madcap satire that has still retained its outrageous power to shock fifty years after initially stunning unsuspecting American audiences.

Making its world premiere on 4K UHD, Hi, Mom! is a vital work of the early New Hollywood, and a key work in the career of master director Brian De Palma (Carrie, Scarface).

Blu-ray Verdict: Now this is brilliantly uber cool stuff from early De Palma - and which felt like a mixture of a pretty raunchy sitcom, a political satire and a pseudo-documentary! My favorite bits were, of course, the political satire / pseudo-documentary parts because they felt heavy and dealt with the issues at hand and how it showed the roles reversed, in essence.

The way those scenes were shot were fantastic as well via handheld camera along with the black and white coloring adding more charm to it. Robert De Niro is quite fine in this, perhaps sometimes going a bit above what might well have been expected, or even asked of him, so maybe from all of his earlier stuff this might well be where his crazy started to seep through.

I mean, it’s crazy to me that this film pre-dates the SLA by like 3 years, especially after the last pseudo-documentary section - and yet it totally does, which is amazing into and unto itself. I mean, the thing about movies from the 70’s is that they weren’t afraid to be f**king weird and we need that back! [N.L.]
